Our fun five-day classroom program is designed to teach compassion and conservation to protect Cameroon’s chimpanzees and other wildlife from extinction. The Indiegogo campaign may be over, but it’s not too late to donate! Our goal is to administer the program to 3000 students and 50 teachers in the 2016-2017 school year and you too can make a difference! Thank you for helping us to foster compassion for chimpanzees and all animals who share our planet!

In the forests of Cameroon, habitat destruction, and the illegal, commercial ape meat trade are driving chimpanzees rapidly toward extinction. While vulnerable populations dwindle, individual chimpanzees suffer unimaginably. The chimpanzees who die violently in the forest at the hands of poachers are not the only victims of the illegal ape meat trade. Infants who survive the hunt can be sold as pets in Cameroon or smuggled out of the country into North Africa and Asia, ultimately condemned to malnutrition, disease, loneliness and misery.
In Defense of Animals-Africa is giving orphans a second chance to live with dignity and joy in the enclosed tracts of habitat forest at our Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center. We currently care for 72 chimpanzees, ranging in age from two to over fifty years.
Working in collaboration with Cameroon's Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife, we have rescued many of our residents while they were still infants. Others have languished years, sometimes decades, on chains or in tiny cages before we could change their lives.
IDA-Africa is working to solve the root of the problem through national and international awareness and by working with Cameroon's government to support law enforcement.

"All who read this book will be deeply moved! How fortunate for Dorothy and the other orphaned, captive chimpanzees - and for those of us who care about them, passionately - that there are people like Sheri Speede who risk their health, and work for a pittance, to rescue them. Sheri's words will bring a tear to all but the hardest of hearts. And a lot of smiles as well!" - Jane Goodall, Ph.D., DBE founder - Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace
