IN DEFENSE OF ANIMALS – AFRICA (IDA–Africa), a non-profit organization operating in Cameroon, Africa, wages a campaign to keep endangered chimpanzees and gorillas living free in the forest and provides sanctuary for chimpanzees orphaned by the illegal commercial bushmeat trade. IDA–Africa works in collaboration with the Cameroon Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife.
Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center is IDA-Africa’s sanctuary. Its resident chimpanzees were captured as infants by the hunters who killed their mothers. Some were rescued by IDA-Africa while still infants, others languished in debilitating confinement for decades. At Sanaga-Yong Center, these orphans of all ages find acceptance and happiness in adoptive families. Protected within tracts of enclosed forest, they relearn the essence of being chimpanzees. Some will eventually be released into habitat forest where they will truly be free again.
Donations directly support on-the-ground efforts to care for chimpanzees at the Sanaga-Yong Center, protect remaining wild chimpanzees, and to implement IDA-Africa's public education and sensitization program in Cameroon.
