Photo Exhibit French Cultural Center

Le Centre Culturel Francais (The French Cultural Center) in the center of Yaounde, Cameroon’s capital, featured photo images of the chimpanzees at Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center for the entire month of February.

Hundreds of posters displayed outside the Cultural Center drew the attention of passersby with this message: To kill, capture, sell or to buy Chimpanzees and Gorillas is illegal.  You risk a fine of 3,000,000-10,000,000 CFA ($5,500-$18,500) and a prison sentence of 1-3 years.

This is the first time the plight of chimpanzees has been the central focus of this sort of exhibition.  It will be seen by thousands of Cameroonians – the very people who will decide the future of Cameroon and it’s great ape heritage.

This photo exhibit has given a voice to the chimpanzees whose future is in peril and has brought more awareness to the killing that must stop if Cameroon’s great apes are to be saved from extinction.
