Thank You for Joining Us to Explore ~ Connect ~ Protect!

Friday May 30th we were fortunate to be surrounded by friends and family at our annual IDA-Africa Gala, held at the prestigious and historic University Club in downtown Portland!

The evening was filled with excitement as we shared an African experience and celebrated the culture, community and chimpanzees who are the soul of Sanaga-Yong Rescue Center.

Guests enjoyed a delicious vegan dinner prepared by the University Club's culinary staff, a heartwarming presentation by Dr. Sheri Speede and even a surprise performance by the talented Von Trapps! The live auction offered a variety of unique items including exclusive artwork and trips to take guests around the world!

We thank you our friends for your kindness, generosity, support and compassion! And for sharing in our vision of and hope for the future of Great Apes!

Six of Portland's favorite bands appeared on the Laughing Planet stage - including Trash Can Joes, Nervous & The Kid, Alan Singley & Pants Machine, Sean Flinn & The Royal We, Monarques and Jared Mees & The Grown Children! All while the HopWorks Urban Brewery team poured Akiba ESB, a special Chimp Fest brew, to a grateful crowd at the Bar Bike! Beautiful Akiba, whose name means "thank you" in the local Cameroon dialect, was our "celebrity" chimp for the event and her image was on all the specially designed merchandise.

Dr. Sheri Speede, Founder and Director of In Defense of Animals-Africa and Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center shared her work and the need to help ensure great apes survive and thrive in their natural habitat in Cameroon.
